Former U.S. Marine held in Russia for more than 4 years has been released, his advocates say

A former US military veteran who was imprisoned in Russia for more than four years on disputed charges and under abusive conditions was released on Tuesday. A group advocating for him said he was gravely ill and at risk of dying.

Trump said Robert Gilman, who was arrested in 2022, was released on a humanitarian basis, after he had reportedly been in a catatonic-like state.

The US government had recently designated Gilman as wrongfully detained.

Gilman was arrested and detained in Russia in 2022, accused of assaulting a police officer following an incident on a train in Voronezh, to the south of Moscow.
